Are You Projecting the Image You Want?

First impressions are lasting. Whether you are going to an interview or meeting someone for the first time, your choice of clothing will have an impact on how you are seen.

In his book, "Think Big and Kick Ass," Donald Trump tells the reader to "Let the shoes, suits, shirts, ties, coats, and accessories such as watches and jewelry tell the world that you understand and value quality. If you do not have a big budget right now, buy fewer items, but better quality. Let everything you do and own convey an image of importance."
As much as it may be annoying, people judge you by your appearance. In this world with so many people we rely on appearance to guide our initial opinions about a person. There is not always time for an in depth conversation with a person. Accept that superficial decision making is natural. Studies have shown that people make multitudes of assumptions and decisions about you in the first 30 seconds of meeting you. So, are your clothing and accessory choices reflecting the image you want?
I look at my wardrobe. I have business clothes - blouses and tailored pants, suits and conservative dresses. Then I have another section of comfy clothing - flowing skirts, jeans, and loose tops. I like to be comfortable above all else. But I have noticed that when I am out in society, I receive more respect and better treatment when I am wearing business clothes. I have come to accept this is how our culture operates. Our culture is not alone in this trait of judging by appearance. When I lived in Vienna I noticed a stark difference in the way I was treated if I was formally dressed - in a suit or fancy dress, or if I was wearing jeans and a sweatshirt. Artistic, anti-establishment sects of people can be just as judging about appearance: notice how in these groups most everyone looks similar. What we wear tells the world about who we are, how much money we have, and what type of person we are likely to be friends with.
If you choose to follow Donald's advice and go first class all the way, ask yourself how much money you are willing to spend. If you are on a budget, ask yourself how many outfits you would need to establish your wardrobe. Many Europeans have only two or three outfits of high quality, which they rotate. Perhaps by choosing all black for your wardrobe, with accessories in color, you could mix and match your outfits more easily. Take a look at your coat and purse - these are the things that are usually noticed first.
Where will you buy your high quality clothing and accessories? Even if you are not on a budget, shopping at outlet stores can be very smart. Today, online outlet stores contain high class brands such as Dolce & Gabbana (D&G), and Italian fashion line of luxury clothing, favored by stars and professionals. D&G purses can be a wise investment: A purse can last for years and makes a distinct impression on who you are.
Perhaps D&G is not your style; you would rather look like a whimsical artist. Take a look at your wardrobe. Do you have clothing items that you absolutely love to wear? Nothing feels so good as a soft fabric or a beautiful color. Studies have shown that people who do not put care into their appearance tend to be more depressed. So go ahead, be superficial and put consideration into your appearance. Remember, there is no reason for you to not deserve the best.
