If you were raised speaking a second language, you can pass up all those long hours of training. In fact, most companies who hire translators favor native speakers for their natural fluency. Therefore, if you are a native speaker of Japanese, who is also fluent in English, you could have a strong chance at carving out a living as a Japanese translator. For those of you who are not native speakers, take heart. If you love the language, anything is possible. It may take some hard work to prove yourself, but one thing that will help is logging in some years in the country that commands your language of choice. If French is your passion, move to France and commit to speaking with locals every day. Immerse yourself completely in the language and resist grouping up with Anglophones.
Once you have the language down, or are nearly there, start contacting translation companies to find out their requirements. Tell them that you are interested in professional translation work. Present yourself as an expert or near expert in the field. Be prepared that the company will test your skills. Talking to companies about what translation work entails is the best way to get your foot in the door for working there someday. Some people may be too busy to answer your questions, so do not be afraid to be persistent. Ask to speak with a professional translator. Then ask questions about the demands of the job, and problems that may come up.
Remember, if you become a professional translator you will be expected to be an expert in that language. Do everything you can to become that expert. Only you know if you have the passion to spend several hours a day speaking and writing the language. Do you truly enjoy working with the language? Or is it just a handy skill you picked up from your bilingual family? Students are waking up to the power that the student loan industry holds over them. Concern is growing about how student loan debt affects the life and career of young adults.
A person wants to go to college. They apply for financial aid and typically receive a small amount of grant and scholarship money, along with a heavy chunk of student loans. Students once signed away on the dotted line for these loans with blithe ignorance. But increasing cultural awareness of financial planning is making students ask questions like never before. Why are these loans so huge? Why does it take me years just to pay off the interest on my loan? Why is the interest as high as it is? How will I ever buy a house or get on with my life after college if I am in enormous debt?
The average student debt after graduation from a four-year program is $20,000 in the United States. Students attending graduate school or medical school have a debt closer to $100,000. The rate of national student debt has grown a whopping 60% in the last eight years. In 2005, Congress cut the student loan program by 12 billion dollars, which forced interest rates to go higher. In several European countries, college is free of tuition costs. I long ago decided that if I ever go to graduate school, it would be in Germany. Even as a foreigner, I would pay nothing except for a few fees (on average $200 per semester), and the level of education is excellent, definitely comparable to colleges in the United States.
Students are asking why our country makes it so difficult to pay for school, when other countries take care of their students. As many students learn the hard way, missing a few payments on their student loan can result in poor credit. Then, when the young adult applies for their first loan through a bank, for example a home loan, the bank denies them. Banks today have sophisticated software to determine the credit history of a person. Nothing is hidden. Using loan origination systems the bank knows in a matter of minutes if you are eligible for a loan, and with their business rule engines banks can make credit decisions instantly.
Students burned by student loan debt are telling the next generation to get educated about what they can do to fight back. The "Student Debt Alert" is a national campaign organized by and for students. SDA actively teaches students how student loan negatively affects their life and career. SDA gives speeches and demonstrations, and encourages students to write letters to the government. The SDA platform calls for reforming student loan programs, increasing student aid funding, improving loan forgiveness policies and loan refinancing options. In 2006, the SDA sent hundreds of postcards to the Spellings Higher Education Commission, expressing concern about the burden of student loan debt.
Students' actions are making a difference. On September 7, 2007, Congress passed the College Cost Reduction and Access Act that increased Pell grant aid and made student loans cheaper and more manageable. Analysts said that the Act passed largely due to the efforts of student campaigns like the SDA.
However, the fight continues. In current debates, Hillary Clinton often discusses her concern that the student loan industry still has too much of a grip on student's lives. Students: Fight on!

Each year that we pull out the Christmas ornaments, I notice that a good two thirds of the ornaments are apples of one variation or another. I will thank my parents for that. Are Medical Billing Problems Getting Any Better?
Nearly everyone has dealt with medical billing mistakes, and the subsequently lengthy process of straightening out problems.

Apparently, somewhere in the billing process, codes were mixed up for other codes, and there was a malfunction in the Medical Billing Company , so said the office assistant. Five months later, because of a delay caused by a malfunction in the medical billing company, I received the incorrect medical bill.
This sort of thing has happened to me before. Once, I noticed a mysterious charge on my medical bill for removal of an ingrown toenail. I was insulted, as my toenails are like impeccable diamonds. I felt slightly embarrassed to call the doctor's office and dispute the charge. In that situation, the doctor refused to agree with me. It was decided that he was in the right, and I am sure they wrote somewhere in my file that I had a memory problem as well as a toenail problem. They forced me to pay up.

Breathalyzers on Prom Night: How Alcohol Testing in High Schools is Becoming the Norm
Recent attention on alcohol high school testing has some communities in an uproar over privacy issues and basic individual rights. With regards to teenage drunk driving deaths and means of prevention, some teachers and parents agree that alcohol detection drug service testing , while invasive, could prevent deaths.
Students going to high school prom this year will notice there is more than balloons and confetti greeting them at the door. Some high schools will have teachers standing ready to take breathalyzers as well as tickets to screen students for alcohol consumption. It made seem like an intrusive way to start your evening with lipstick covered lips onto a breathalyzer reader, but teachers and parents agree it can save lives.
According to sources, motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death for people aged 15 to 20. It is estimated that one teen is killed every hour in the United States because of teenage drunk driving. So communities, such as the Pequannock Township High School in New Jersey are doing something about it and demanding random alcohol testing as part of the school program.
Where students feel attacked is how the school system is going about testing. The (EtG), ethyl glucuronide urine test the school is using to test students can prove up to 90 days when the last time the student consumed alcohol. So, if a student was at a party over the weekend, they could be tested on Monday and the results would show if they have consumed alcohol or not. In more recent news, EtG alcohol testing has been developed for hair alcohol testing where a sample of scalp hair is collected from a student and sent to a laboratory where is it then tested for alcohol use. With hair alcohol testing, past alcohol abuse can be measured up to 12 months, depending on the length of the hair sample.
Other findings report that the American Civil Liberties Union says random urine alcohol testing is an invasion of privacy, while in 2002, the U.S. Supreme Court in Board of Education of Pottawatomie v. Earls, voted in favor to allow public schools to test students for drugs if they were participating in competitive sports or extra curricular activities. Not otherwise. Student privacy rights vary from state to state which can give greater protection over student’s rights compared to others.
As more research unfolds, newer methods of random alcohol screening could be enforced. Depending on the past police records of students, number of detentions or other behaviors in school could affect the degree of ramifications due to positive alcohol evidence in a student’s sample. As one researcher put it, a phone call home to parents could be the only punishment necessary to prevent under age alcohol consumption in the future.
